Mustard in The IT Crowd
Graham Linehan asks to use Mustard mag on the set of The IT Crowd
JULY 2007: It turns out that Graham Linehan, writer of The IT Crowd (and Father Ted, Black Books etc.) is a fan of Mustard and asked to use it as 'set dressing' in the next series; it's one of the many things scattered around the guys' office. (It turns out he saw Mustard in Gosh comic shop.)
I went along to see an episode being recorded and was very excited to see the mag right on the top of piles on two different desks. Here's some photos:
SEPT 2007: I got the official publicity photos from Channel 4 for the new series of The IT Crowd and my jaw dropped when I saw this one.
This photo turned up in many newspapers and magazines when there's an article about - or a TV listing for - the show. I also saw it up on the wall of the Talkback studios.
I asked Graham if he'd be up for being interviewed for the first issue of the new, relaunched, colour Mustard mag.
We met up at the Talkback studio where we watched the first cut of an episode that the editor had put together. Then we went for lunch in a cafe nearby (he recommended the omlette) where he gave the first part of this great interview.
We did a follow-up via Skype a few weeks later, once Graham was back in Ireland, and he also did a 'how to write a sitcom' guide for the box-outs.
SEPT 2007: This Friday's episode of The IT Crowd is called 'Moss and the German'. There's a scene where Moss is talking to Jen in the office and Moss is reading Mustard - he has the cover turned up slightly, so you get a decent look at it.
(This episode starts with the hilarious DVD warning that's now a YouTube hit.)
That photo with Roy holding Mustard turns up again - this time on the cover of the American DVD!
APRIL 2009: There's a Set Tour on the DVD of The IT Crowd series 3, where Graham Linehan points out the many geeky things they've spread around the office set. At one point he holds up a copy of Mustard magazine, calling us "a friend of the show". Lovely!
JUNE 2010: Mustard's Alan Moore poster appears in The IT Crowd series 4.
